Common questions

  • How does ondansetron work?

Ondansetron is a medication prescribed to decrease migraine-associated nausea and vomiting. It works by blocking signals in the brain that trigger feelings of sickness. It does not address migraine pain itself. It can be used in conjunction with acute migraine treatment as needed.

  • What precautions should I take when using ondansetron?

Be sure to discuss your medical history, current medications, and any concerns with your provider so they can determine whether ondansetron is right for you. It is important to remember that ondansetron treats migraine-related nausea and vomiting. It will not prevent or treat migraine attacks.

You should not use ondansetron if you have an allergy to it or other selective receptor antagonists. Tell your provider if you have heart rhythm issues, electrolyte imbalances, severe liver disease, or gastrointestinal issues.

  • What are the side effects of ondansetron?

The most common side effects of ondansetron are headache, fatigue, constipation, and diarrhea. More serious side effects include abnormal heart rhythm, serotonin syndrome, allergic reaction, and temporary loss of vision. If you experience severe side effects, please seek immediate in-person medical care.

  • Can I take ondansetron with other medications?

It's important to tell your provider if you are taking any other medications, over-the-counter drugs, supplements, or if you have any allergies. If you start using any new medications while taking ondansetron, let your provider know. Check with your provider before stopping or starting any of your current medicines.

Ondansetron should not be taken if you are currently taking apomorphine (a treatment for Parkinson’s disease), tramadol, or certain serotonergic medications (like antidepressants).

  • How do I take ondansetron ODT?

Ondansetron ODT works best if it is taken at the first sign of nausea or vomiting during a migraine attack. It is an orally disintegrating tablet, meaning it dissolves quickly in your mouth. You do not need to take it with water.
